NEEDHAM, Mass., June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Carbonite®, a leading provider of online backup, was named one of the Best Places to Work in Massachusetts by the Boston Business Journal in its eighth annual regional awards program.  The honor recognizes Carbonite's achievements in creating a positive work environment that attracts and retains employees through a combination of employee satisfaction, working conditions and company culture.

Carbonite was one of 440 companies to qualify for consideration, a 10 percent increase in nominees over 2009, ranking No. 6 on the list in its size category based on the results of employee-satisfaction surveys taken throughout the spring.

"At Carbonite, great people have made all the difference. We work hard to make sure our recruiting, training and compensation practices enable us to attract and retain the best talent," said Carbonite CEO and co-founder David Friend. "Being named one of Boston's Best Places to Work is a wonderful recognition of these efforts, and we are honored."

"In good times and in bad, our results validate how the creation of the right corporate culture can create powerful business advantages," said George Donnelly, Boston Business Journal editor. "Employees are proud to work for companies that are about more than just business."

The top 20 companies in three size categories small (20-100 employees), midsize (101-500 employees) and large (more than 500 employees) were profiled in a special supplement of the Journal on June 11.

The survey project was launched in January by the Journal in conjunction with market research firm QMR Inc. of Wichita, Kansas. Companies were evaluated on the results of more than 20,000 employee-satisfaction surveys. Employees answered questionnaires that addressed such factors as their pride in the company, company encouragement, support and recognition of achievement and relationships with co-workers and supervisors. The results were analyzed and scored by assigning points to each question.

"Accommodating employees' personal needs pays back dividends of loyalty and productivity," said Boston Business Journal Publisher Chris McIntosh. "The companies on our list recognize that their commitment to employees is especially important as the economy strengthens and competition for talent continues to grow." McIntosh continued, "The Best Places to Work know the care of their employees is instrumental in maintaining the quality and reputation for services and products."

Carbonite launched its online backup service in 2006.
