Boston (PRWEB) December 4, 2007 -- Lifehacker, the award-winning daily blog from Gawker Media that features tips, shortcuts, and downloads to help users work and live smarter and more efficiently, recently held a Lifehacker Faceoff poll pitting online data backup services Carbonite and Mozy against one another. In a close vote, 51.8 percent to 48.2 percent, Carbonite was announced the winner on November 29, 2007.

Carbonite’s passionate user base prompted the poll after Carbonite was endorsed by users as follow-up to articles about data back-up on the Lifehacker site.

“There were lots of shout-outs for flat-priced, unlimited storage Carbonite,” Lifehacker Editor Gina Tapani stated.

Carbonite offers unlimited online data backup for about $5 per month. Carbonite encrypts users’ files and sends them over the Internet to a secure data center where they are stored on redundant servers. The service runs continuously in the background and takes the hassle out of protecting the irreplaceable contents of consumers’ computers.

“A close battle like this simply means that both companies appear to have numerous happy users who are willing to spend a few minutes to vote,” said David Friend, CEO of Carbonite. “Our users are all paying subscribers and they are eager to share their positive experience and loyalty towards Carbonite. Online backup is one of the most important new applications on the Internet and it’s great to see how passionate many users have become.”

Since it was launched, Carbonite has backed up more than 2.5 billion files and in the past year, Carbonite's customers have been able to recover over 160 million digital photos, documents, e-mails and other files that otherwise would have been lost forever. On average, Carbonite backs up the equivalent of more than 24,000 photos every minute; over 9,000 songs every minute; and more than two million files every hour.
